Information

If your NREMT Certification expired, and you want to renew or are required be National Registered again, here are your options:

  • NREMT Certification Expired less than 2 years ago.
If your National EMS Certification lapsed as an EMT-Basic within a two year period, you can obtain National EMS Certification by completing a state-approved Refresher course and successfully completing the cognitive and psychomotor examinations.

  • NREMT Certification Expired more than 2 years ago, but you are still certified at a state level.
You are currently state licensed as an EMT-Basic, you can obtain National EMS Certification by completing a state-approved Refresher course and successfully completing the cognitive and psychomotor examinations.

  • NREMT Certification Expired more than 2 years ago and you are no longer certified at a state level.
You must complete an entire state-approved EMT-Basic course and complete the cognitive and psychomotor examinations.

So, What does this all mean. It means your NREMT lapsed more than 2 years ago and you are not currently licensed/certified by your State EMS Office, you will need to retake the entire EMT Course. If you are less than 2 years NREMT lapsed, but are licensed/certified by your State EMS Office, then you will just need to take a refresher course, the written test, and the skills test.

If you re-certify a lapsed NREMT, will you have the same NREMT number?

I doubt it, but I don't know for sure.

I am a state certified EMT. How do I apply for NREMT Testing without taking the whole class again? I cannot find any information on the NREMT website.

After you have taken a DOT approved Refresher class, you need to register with the NREMT as a student.
Go To NREMT.org and select the link for "Create New Account." Fill the the form and mark the check box for "Applying to become nationally certified."
After your account has been created, log in and chose "Create New Application".
Fill in the form with your refresher course information, BLS (CPR) information, and your current state certification information.
Overall, it is the same procedure as a new EMT, but you only need a refresher course.
